HOW I FOUND MY VOICE: MY PERSONAL EVOLUTION STORY!
I wasn’t born confident.
I wasn’t born with a mic in my hand and oil on my head – per se.
In fact, if you’d met me as a little girl, you would never believe I’d become a public speaker.
I grew up in a family of seven beautiful girls.
Somehow, I was always the one who was told I wasn’t as beautiful as my 6 other sisters.
Over time, this planted seeds of rejection and silence in me.
I became the quiet one.
I became afraid to speak.
I hated the spotlight and shied away from every opportunity to take up space.
For years, I hid from everyone, even though something deep inside me kept whispering there was more.
Then one day, when I was just 13 years old, everything shifted.
That blessed Sunday morning, my Sunday School teacher called me out:
“You’re always whispering answers to others, but you’ve never spoken in class. Answer this question,” he said to me.
I begged him to let me pass, but he refused.
At that point, I prayed that the earth would open up and swallow me whole.
I didn’t mind dying and going to be with the Lord: if it meant ‘avoiding this moment where I had to stand up and speak up.”
Yeah! It was that bad!
However, that moment became a doorway to my future.
I believe my Sunday School teacher saw the ‘Star’ in me, because soon after, I was asked to preach in front of 2,000+ adults in the main church.
This time, I cried.
I stared at myself in the mirror and thought:
Who would listen to me? I don’t feel beautiful. I don’t feel worthy. I don’t feel ready.
But the leaders weren’t having my excuses, so I had to do it anyway
I Remember Mounting The stage On The Day I Was Supposed To Preach To Over 2000 Adults!
Picture this:
- Here was a 13-year old girl.
- Scared to death (my feet were literally shaking in my shoes).
- Standing before a crowd of over 2000 adults: a crowd made up of both friendly and unfriendly-looking faces.
- But somehow, I had to deliver.
The pulpit was taller than me!
But, with a shaky voice, I spoke.
Softly. Quietly. Carefully.
With each word I uttered, I felt my confidence increase.
By the time I was done with that sermon, everyone wanted to know my name and whose daughter I was.
Even my parents were stunned.
That was the first day I realised:
People don’t care about your beauty when value is on the line.
That Day Opened Doors I Did Not Expect.
I soon became the church’s go-to newscaster. Then a commentator for theatre arts. After which, I became the girl who anchored events and gave speeches.
By 2013, I became the Press Leader at FECA. I soon became the Vice President of FECA.
A few years later, I became the first-ever female President of FECA Cross River South Zone.
University came, and the story repeated. This time, it happened on a much bigger scale.
By this time, I was already speaking at summits, political meetings, national conferences, and even served as VP of the largest faculty in UNICAL.
At first, I didn’t call it “public speaking.”
It was just me, showing up and making a difference whether free or paid.
But By 2020, I Saw It Clearly.
This was no longer ‘just’ passion.
It was a powerful, in-demand skill that could turn my whole life around: and it was profitable.
So I got serious about building a career path as a Public Speaking Professional.
